Creating A Fun, Safe Garden For Your Children

As the mum of five young children, I know how important it is to have access to a safe outdoor space for your children to play. Being cooped up in the house all day isn't good for the kids or the parents, but you also can't let young kids play in a space that's hazardous. When we bought our new family home, there was a lot of work to do in the garden to make it childproof, and we also wanted to make it a fun place for the kids to play. We erected a new fence, fitted a combination lock on the garden gate, had poisonous plants removed, cordoned off the pool and created a play area complete with swings, a slide and outdoor games. I started this blog to share my DIY gardening tips, and I hope you find it interesting and useful.

Window Blinds | 3 Useful Steps To Clean Wooden Venetian Blinds

by Darlene Jenkins

Wooden Venetian blinds are gorgeous window treatments in your home or office because they deliver both aesthetic and functional appeal. Wooden Venetian blinds cannot be soaked or sprayed with harsh chemicals because the wood can easily become warped and damaged. Here are some useful steps to clean wooden Venetian blinds.

Wipe Dust Off Using Paper Towels And A Vacuum Cleaner

Window blinds are bound to have a layer of dust and dirt accumulated on them over time. Use paper towels to remove the surface-level dust and dirt from them. Once the first layer of dust has been removed, use your vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove as much of the residual dirt as possible.

Use Wood Cleaner To Remove Stains And Stubborn Dirt

The vacuuming and paper towel wiping process will remove surface-level dirt, but stains and stubborn dirt require more intensive cleaning. A specialised wood cleaner is ideal to remove these stains from the surface of your blinds. Wood cleaner from any home improvement store is specially formulated to ensure minimal damage to wood, so make sure to use this on your wooden blinds. When you use a wood cleaner, dab it on a soft cloth and wipe off the stain and stubborn dirt with it.  Use another cloth and wipe the slat dry and prevent dirt from falling on to the other slats during the cleaning process. The wood cleaner should remove most of the stains and stubborn dirt from the surface. Avoid using water because the moisture and dampness can warp and damage the wood.

Spray With Wood Oil

Wood oil sprays are available at most home improvement stores and are good for adding a protective layer around your wooden Venetian blinds, while giving the slats a shiny, healthy and near-new appearance. Wood oil also penetrates deep into wood to offer water, UV and mould resistance, making this an excellent protective choice for long lasting wooden Venetian blinds. You simply need to spray a little wood oil on the blinds. Wait for a few minutes to allow the oil to penetrate through the surface and make sure you follow the instructions of the manufacturer closely. You may need to wipe the surface after a while, depending on the bottle's instructions.

Avoid water at all costs when cleaning wooden Venetian blinds because you don't want to stain and warp the wood. Follow these smart cleaning steps to enhance the appearance of your home's blinds.
