Creating A Fun, Safe Garden For Your Children

As the mum of five young children, I know how important it is to have access to a safe outdoor space for your children to play. Being cooped up in the house all day isn't good for the kids or the parents, but you also can't let young kids play in a space that's hazardous. When we bought our new family home, there was a lot of work to do in the garden to make it childproof, and we also wanted to make it a fun place for the kids to play. We erected a new fence, fitted a combination lock on the garden gate, had poisonous plants removed, cordoned off the pool and created a play area complete with swings, a slide and outdoor games. I started this blog to share my DIY gardening tips, and I hope you find it interesting and useful.

2 Major Things to Consider When Buying a Bunk Bed Mattress

by Darlene Jenkins

Bunk beds come in handy for families who can't afford to have separate bedrooms for their kids. The furniture not just helps save space, but is also an ideal place for siblings to interact with each other and learn living together. Though there are several benefits to bunk beds, there are some serious problems attached as well. Let us not dig too deep here but just focus on the mattress part. Ensure you check mark the following when shopping for a bunk bed mattress next time.

Mattress Height and Weight

The height or the thickness of the mattress is an attribute that can't be ignored, for it lends to the fabric case's comfort and safety features. The mattress mustn't be too thin or thick—it should be the right height.

There is no centimetre or inch guideline to follow since not all bunk beds are built the same. As a general rule, ensure the mattress doesn't lean over the side rail, as the protruding guard rail ensures the kid doesn't roll and fall out. A thinner bed, on the other hand, may not provide the right amount of cushioning for a good night's sleep. These aspects of thickness and density, however, won't be of great concern for the bottom bed.

Heavy mattresses are not ideal for the top row. Generally, these are not easy to carry and difficult to position at the upper bunk. The additional heft of the mattress also means difficulties cleaning the mattress and the uppermost frame.

Memory foam mattresses are ideal for the top bunk bed floor. These are generally easier to roll and lug along, and also resistant to dust mites. Also, the mattress's ability to roll ensures there are no pronounced uneven patterns over time.

Polystyrene foams are usually not recommended, thanks to their high density and weight. Latex mattresses are also not recommended for both the upper and lower deck, as they are bouncier and encourages trampoline-like action, which can turn out dangerous and cause head injuries if the vertical space of both the shelves is limited. The latex mattress is also hypoallergenic.

Supplementary Mattress

Most bunk beds come packaged with a standard mattress. These are built to fit the bed frame and are sold along with the bed, usually for a discounted price. Therefore, it just doesn't make sense to buy a separate mattress, right? Wrong.

Bunk beds come in wide varieties—in terms of their style, price, material choices, etc. But the fact that the furniture is still viewed as a budget option cannot be denied. Manufacturers generally don't bundle in good-quality mattresses with bunk beds. The ones offered are typically the hand-me-down types or mattresses that won't see too many quality-conscious buyers when sold as a standalone product.

But not all sellers package in a cheap deal. There are some who pay close attention to the fit and finish of the mattress. Therefore, don't lap up any mattress that sells along with the bed. Do some research.

Bunk beds are generally temporary or alternative sleeping solutions; they usually aren't part of the larger perspective in most houses. Kids are likely to outgrow the bed in a few years, and most adults don't fancy sleeping on such compact bed frames. Therefore, don't spend too lavishly on a bunk bed mattress. A simple, standard mattress with good-quality waterproofing cover should get the job done. Contact local experts such as Sweetdreams Bedding Co for more information.
