Creating A Fun, Safe Garden For Your Children

As the mum of five young children, I know how important it is to have access to a safe outdoor space for your children to play. Being cooped up in the house all day isn't good for the kids or the parents, but you also can't let young kids play in a space that's hazardous. When we bought our new family home, there was a lot of work to do in the garden to make it childproof, and we also wanted to make it a fun place for the kids to play. We erected a new fence, fitted a combination lock on the garden gate, had poisonous plants removed, cordoned off the pool and created a play area complete with swings, a slide and outdoor games. I started this blog to share my DIY gardening tips, and I hope you find it interesting and useful.

Make antimacassars and cushion covers from your old curtains to revamp your living room

by Darlene Jenkins

When the curtains in your living room are looking worn out or faded and you want to replace them, use this as the opportunity to revamp the whole living room without changing your colour scheme or having to spend a lot of money on new covers for the furniture, or on new cushions.

Choose new curtains that match the existing colour scheme and use the old curtains to make antimacassars and cushion covers.

Make antimacassars to protect the furniture in your living room

For the sofa and chair arms:

Measure the length and width of the top section of the arms of the sofa and chairs in your living room.

Measure a piece of the curtain for each arm that measures:

  • Length: 15cm shorter than the length of the arm.
  • Width: The width of the arm plus 23cm.

Fold, pin and sew a hem all around the pieces of fabric, either by hand or using your sewing machine.

You will now have antimacassars to protect all the arms of the sofa and chairs in the living room.

For the sofa and chair backs:

Measure the width and depth of the back of the sofa and chairs.

Measure and cut out a piece of the old curtain for each back that measures:

  • Length: 23cm longer than the depth of the back of the sofa and chairs.
  • Width: 10cm narrower than the width of the back.

Fold, pin and sew a hem all around the pieces of fabric, either by hand or using your sewing machine.

You will now have antimacassars to protect all the backs of the sofa and chairs in the living room.

Make removable covers for the cushions in the living room

Measure all the cushions in your living room.

Measure and cut a piece of fabric to make a cover for each of the cushions.

The pieces of curtain should measure:

  • Length: Twice the width of the cushion, plus 20cm.
  • Width: 3cm wider than the measured height of the cushion.

To make up each cushion cover:

Hem the raw edge of the fabric along the width.

Sew the cushion covers as follows:

Fold the fabric together, with the wrong sides facing. The one hemmed edge should be parallel to the other, but 20cm away from the other hemmed edge.

Sew both edges of the fabric together.

Turn the cushion cover inside out. There will be an overlap on the back of the cushion cover so that you can put it onto the cushion easily and can remove it for washing.
