Creating A Fun, Safe Garden For Your Children

As the mum of five young children, I know how important it is to have access to a safe outdoor space for your children to play. Being cooped up in the house all day isn't good for the kids or the parents, but you also can't let young kids play in a space that's hazardous. When we bought our new family home, there was a lot of work to do in the garden to make it childproof, and we also wanted to make it a fun place for the kids to play. We erected a new fence, fitted a combination lock on the garden gate, had poisonous plants removed, cordoned off the pool and created a play area complete with swings, a slide and outdoor games. I started this blog to share my DIY gardening tips, and I hope you find it interesting and useful.

Your 3-Step Solution to a Low Maintenance Yard

by Darlene Jenkins

Do you love your yard but hate the amount of time you spend gardening? While gardening can be relaxing and therapeutic, there's not always enough hours in the week to keep it looking gorgeous. Luckily, there are a few ways to minimise the amount of time you spend in gardening gloves and gumboots. Here are 3 tips for keeping your yard low maintenance.

Container Planting

Growing flowers and vegetables in your yard can quickly get out of hand. One minute you're sewing a few seeds across a bed of soil, the next you're spending hours watering and weeding hundreds of fully-grown plants. Not to mention the hours spent planning layouts and maintaining soil quality. Why go through all that stress when you could minimise your input by growing in containers? From raised wooden beds to plant pots, there are dozens of container types to suit any garden. And with so many container-suitable plants out there, you'll never be limited. When you use containers, you can easily control the soil quality, number of plants, and layout of your yard without uprooting your entire yard every time you change your mind. Overall, containers are less permanent, less effort, and less time-consuming.

Composite Decking

There's no doubt that wood decking is gorgeous, but the hours it takes to maintain soon add up. When exposed to the elements, it can become discoloured, grimy and slippery, and even infected with fungi. If you don't clean and treat it repeatedly, you end up with decking that's unsightly and unsafe. Thankfully, there's any easier, low-maintenance alternative -- composite decking. Styled to look just like wood, composite decking gives you all the benefits of real wood with none of the drawbacks. Thanks to its anti-slip and UV-resistant properties, high-quality decking won't become dangerous or discoloured if you don't tend to it. It's relatively maintenance free, requiring nothing more than simple sweeping and mopping when it gets dirty.

Artificial Grass

The benefits of synthetic grass over natural grass can be astronomical. Mowing, watering, fertilising, aerating and resting your natural lawn all amount to several hours of tough labour every month. With artificial turf, your only maintenance requirement is a some light cleaning of any debris now and again. It will never be killed off by low rainfall or harsh Australian sun. High-quality synthetic turf is longer lasting than regular grass and saves you money in the long run. Don't be put off by any preconceptions about appearance - nowadays, synthetic grass companies blend blades of various colours, textures and lengths to give a highly realistic appearance and feel. You'll save tons of effort without sacrificing the beauty of your yard.
