Creating A Fun, Safe Garden For Your Children

As the mum of five young children, I know how important it is to have access to a safe outdoor space for your children to play. Being cooped up in the house all day isn't good for the kids or the parents, but you also can't let young kids play in a space that's hazardous. When we bought our new family home, there was a lot of work to do in the garden to make it childproof, and we also wanted to make it a fun place for the kids to play. We erected a new fence, fitted a combination lock on the garden gate, had poisonous plants removed, cordoned off the pool and created a play area complete with swings, a slide and outdoor games. I started this blog to share my DIY gardening tips, and I hope you find it interesting and useful.

3 Reasons to Have an Awning Installed

by Darlene Jenkins

If you are thinking about having an awning installed over a backyard window or over your patio, you might currently be deciding if it worth the money. An awning is often made of sturdy fabric material that protects the outdoor space from the elements, while also adding an extra design element. Here are some reasons to have an awning installed.

You Have Protection from the Elements

One of the main reasons people choose to get an awning installed in their backyard is because it protects that space from the elements. You might have an outdoor kitchen that needs protecting from rain so that your barbecue and stovetop doesn't get ruined, or you might want to cover the sitting area in the patio so rain and snow doesn't cause permanent damage. It can also be used when it is a little windy out, but you still want to enjoy the outdoor space. Awnings also provide excellent protection from the sun's UV rays, protecting your skin and eyes from sun damage.

It Creates a Functional Outdoor Space

It can sometimes be difficult to discern the different areas of your patio and backyard and what their use is. One great way to section off part of the patio and turn it into a relaxing, sitting area for your family or to entertain guests is with an awning. Choose one side of the patio where you want to set up a fun outdoor room. This will be the place your family gets together for an outdoor meal or to have conversation in front of an outdoor fire pit. You can have the awning up not only to protect the area but to help section off the space and turn it into an outdoor living room. Some awnings even come with built-in LED lights which further help add to the ambiance of the space.

They Are Easy to Use

If you are hesitant to have an awning installed because you think it will be inconvenient or difficult to use, think again. Retractable awnings are very well built and will move in and out with just the push of a button. This makes it easy to put up the awning when you need it, but keep it closed when you want the entire backyard space to remain open. There is also very little maintenance and cleaning that needs to be done with the awning, further adding to its convenience.

Remember that there are also many awnings to choose from, from window and deck awnings that stay put, to retractable ones you can easily control.
